BRISBANE City stores have gone into lockdown, with police
declaring an emergency situation in Queen St Mall, where a man with a gun is surrounded by police.
12.50pm: There are reports that police have fired two shots, injuring the shirtless gunman in Brisbane's Queen Street Mall.An ambulance has moved in to take him away.
12.40pm: There have been reports of gunshots from within the Queen Street Mall.Several witnesses reported hearing two shots just before 12.40pm.
At 12.29pm: Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Ainsworth has said police have "contained" the gunman and he is being spoken to by negotiators.He is contained in a shop but police have again asked members of the public to stay away.
At 12.20pm: People have been evacuated from stores. Customers from coffee shop Brew said they were locked in about half an hour ago and were just let out after police ordered their evacuation. Mother of two Donna Holt said she had been dining in Hungry Jacks with her family when police told people in the restaurant there was a man with a gun. Diners were then barricaded in the restaurant and ordered to move to a lower floor from where they were later evacuated, she said.
At 12.12pm: The Special Emergency Response Team swooped down on the Queen St Mall and have moved towards the Myer Centre.Buildings in George St have also been put into lockdown.Witnesses are reporting members of the public who were watching the drama unfold from George Street have been pushed back further following reports the gunman is moving back towards Treasury Casino and Hotel.
Shoppers locked inside the storeroom of Cotton On have said SERT are talking to them from the front of the store but have not given them the all-clear to leave. Matt Taylor, a 21-year-old freelance photographer from Redcliffe said he saw the whole incident , which started 11.10am. "I was walking next to the man, outside the Myer Centre," he said.
Mr Taylor said police had the whole Myer centre and Queen Street Mall area locked down within five minutes At 12-noon: the man was reportedly sitting on a chair, shirtless, holding a gun to his chin.The emergency situation was declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act about 11.20am this morning. At 11.45am: Witnesses said police have blocked off George St at the top of Queen St Mall.Police have confirmed an emergency situation has been declared in Queen St Mall after reports of “an armed person”.There is a large police presence near the Treasury Casino and Hotel and officers are reported to be crouching behind their police cars.
Witnesses have said there is a man with a gun in the mall surrounded by police, and that the gunman "looked like a bikie and high as a kite".Witness have reported police officers were seen running through King George Square towards the Mall while others have been locked in the storeroom of retail shops.Police Media have confirmed Queen St Mall has been evacuated but are yet to comment on the reports of a man with a gun
Police have evacuated the Mall and are ushering people towards City Hall.An employee at Fitness First saw officers running with their guns drawn.Stores confirmed to be in lockdown include the Myer Centre and Cotton On.
The Brisbane CBD quickly emptied when reports of a gunman were reported shortly before lunch on Friday.
